Housing Minister visits Weston
Housing Minister, Caroline Flint MP, visited the Weston Otmoor “eco” site for the first time today (31st July 2008), prior to meeting with representatives of Cherwell District Council at 11.30am. She then had a meeting with representatives of Bicester and Kidlington town councils, surrounding Parish councils Weston Front (campaign group established to co-ordinate the views of the many parties that oppose the development).
The action group took the opportunity to show Ms Flint pictures of the land in question, including proof of attempts to “trash” the land prior to her visit. Weston Front representative Peter Seaward said “Rather than arrange a noisy protest, we wanted to have a constructive dialogue with Caroline Flint to demonstrate that, although there is support for ecological development, this proposal is little more than a massive housing estate built on green fields, green belt land and SSSI (sights of special scientific interest). It is a little disappointing that she only drove past the proposed sight rather than get out of the car, but at least she has seen the pictures we provided”
Labour councillor from Kidlington Andrew Hornsby-Smith stated “she seemed to listen to our points and then re-iterated the tests that the plan would have to pass. But it certainly doesn’t come anywhere near meeting them at the moment, and I can’t see how they can”.
